Data and licences

Viking Finds is built on open data. This page credits every source and states the licence each one carries.

Norway

Riksantikvaren (the Directorate for Cultural Heritage), dataset Kulturminner – Lokaliteter, Enkeltminner og Sikringssoner, distributed through Geonorge under the Norwegian Licence for Open Government Data (NLOD). We import individual monuments dated to the Viking Age or Late Iron Age and group them by locality. Each site links back to its Kulturminnesøk record.

Sweden

Riksantikvarieämbetet, Kulturmiljöregistret via the open Fornsök WFS (CC0). Runic inscriptions, grave fields and hillforts. The service carries no per-monument dating, so Swedish sites show the typical period for their monument type.

Denmark

Slots- og Kulturstyrelsen, Fund og Fortidsminder. Localities with at least one monument dated to the Viking Age (750–1066). Parish and municipality names from DAGI (Dataforsyningen, CC0).

Iceland

Minjastofnun Íslands, the national register of archaeological sites (Fornleifaskráning) via the gis.is WFS. Settlement-era graves, churches, farm mounds, assembly booths and boathouses whose recorded date range begins by 1050.

Wikidata and Wikipedia

Named sites elsewhere from Wikidata (CC0) and English Wikipedia (text CC BY-SA 4.0). Claimed Norse sites in North America that mainstream archaeology does not accept are shown as community, not verified, with a note.

Community contributions

Sites, photos and text added by members are licensed CC BY 4.0, credited to the contributor.

Recent finds (news)

The recent finds feed shows headlines and a short extract from third-party news outlets, each linked to — and copyright — its original publisher. We keep only a brief snippet and a link; we never republish full articles or re-host their photographs. News discovery is powered in part by The GDELT Project (open data, attribution required).

Reuse and API access

The compiled Viking Finds atlas — our selection, descriptions and arrangement of these records, together with member contributions — is our own work, and all rights in the compilation are reserved. Please do not scrape the site or copy the dataset in bulk. The individual source datasets above remain under their own licences (for example NLOD or CC0); you are free to obtain those underlying facts from the original providers.

We offer programmatic access to the data on request. Email crew@vikingfinds.com telling us who you are and how you plan to use it, and we will issue an API key. Approved use must credit Viking Finds with a visible link to vikingfinds.com.
