The Vindelev Hoard is a spectacular cache of Migration-period gold — bracteates, reworked Roman medallions and a scabbard mount — unearthed by a metal-detectorist near Jelling, Denmark, in 2020. One of its runic pendants carries the oldest securely dated reference to the god Odin, opening a window onto the beliefs that would later shape the Viking world.

Historien

In December 2020 a novice metal-detectorist, Ole Ginnerup Schytz, swept a friend's field near Vindelev, around eight kilometres north-east of Jelling in eastern Jutland, and within hours struck one of the richest gold finds in Danish history. Buried barely a spade's depth down lay some 800 grams of worked gold across roughly 23 objects: saucer-shaped stamped pendants called bracteates — the largest nearly 14 centimetres across and the biggest known anywhere — alongside Roman gold medallions reworked as jewellery and the gilded mouthpiece of a sword scabbard. The objects span the fourth to sixth centuries CE — the Migration Period, or Germanic Iron Age, generations before the Viking Age proper. Yet the hoard speaks directly to the world the Vikings would inherit. Several bracteates carry mythological scenes and runic script, and one, catalogued X13, bears a line read by National Museum runologist Lisbeth Imer and linguist Krister Vasshus as "He is Odin's man." It is the oldest securely dated naming of Odin yet found, pushing the god's documented worship back roughly 150 years. Researchers think the treasure was assembled and buried together around the mid-sixth century, perhaps as an offering during the climate crisis that followed the volcanic dust-veil of 536 CE, or simply to protect a magnate's wealth in dangerous times. The reworked Roman medallions point to long-distance elite diplomacy, and the sheer weight of gold suggests Vindelev was a centre of power centuries before neighbouring Jelling rose as a royal capital.

Hva du får se

There is nothing to see at the discovery site itself — a private, working farm field outside Vindelev, with no marker or public access. The hoard's home is the museum Kongernes Jelling, roughly eight kilometres south-west, where the gold went on permanent display in 2025. There you can stand close to the bracteates, including the world's largest and the runic pendant X13 that names Odin, and study the reworked Roman medallions and scabbard mount that reveal a warlord's far-flung connections. The museum sets the treasure against the neighbouring Jelling monuments — the great rune stones, burial mounds and church raised by Gorm the Old and Harald Bluetooth some four centuries later — so a single visit links this pre-Viking gold to the royal heart of Viking-Age Denmark just outside the door.

Besøk

Base yourself in Jelling, a village on the railway line between Vejle and Herning; Vejle, the nearest large town, lies about 12 km south-east with mainline rail connections. The gold is shown at the museum Kongernes Jelling in the centre of Jelling, beside the UNESCO-listed rune stones and burial mounds, so the hoard and the monuments make one easy visit on foot. Entry arrangements, seasons and opening times change, and admission to the outdoor monuments may differ from the museum's galleries, so check the official Kongernes Jelling website before travelling. The Vindelev find spot itself is private farmland with no access or anything to see; there is no reason to seek it out.
