Valsgärde

Valsgärde is a burial ground on a low gravel ridge above the Fyris River, about three kilometres north of Gamla Uppsala in central Sweden's Uppland province. The cemetery was in use across many centuries — sources place its span roughly between 400 and 1100 CE — carrying the site from the Migration and Vendel periods into the Viking Age. Its fame rests on fifteen boat graves in which high-status men, apparently one from each generation of a leading local family, were laid to rest in boats surrounded by lavish equipment. Systematic excavation began in 1928 under Sune Lindqvist of Uppsala University, whose campaigns of the 1920s and 1930s uncovered the first boat graves. Work resumed after the Second World War under Bertil Almgren and Bengt Schönbäck, running to 1952 and bringing the tally of boat graves to fifteen; further investigations in the 1990s examined the associated settlement. Alongside the boat burials, archaeologists recorded more than sixty cremation graves together with chamber and coffin inhumations, so that the cemetery as a whole holds on the order of ninety graves. The boat graves preserved extraordinary assemblages: rare helmets, swords, shields and other weapons, riding gear, glass vessels and food offerings, along with sacrificed horses and other animals meant to accompany the dead. Because each grave was recorded with unusual care — down to the thousand-odd rivets from every boat — they offer an exceptionally detailed picture of elite Scandinavian society over many generations. Valsgärde is frequently discussed alongside the nearby Vendel cemetery and the celebrated ship burial at Sutton Hoo in England, whose grave goods share striking stylistic parallels — evidence of the wide contacts enjoyed by northern elites in this era.

Today Valsgärde is quiet countryside: an open, gently sloping meadow on a ridge overlooking the Fyris valley, with dry-meadow flora and views over the river. There are no reconstructed boats or grand monuments, and the boat graves were fully excavated and back-filled long ago, so much of the drama lies underfoot rather than in view. The setting itself, with Gamla Uppsala's royal mounds rising across the plain nearby, helps convey why this spot mattered. Valsgärde lies about 3 km north of Gamla Uppsala, in open countryside north of Uppsala. It is easily reached by car or bicycle — the walking and cycling routes around Gamla Uppsala bring you close, from where it is a short trip further north — and city buses from Uppsala also run nearby, leaving a short walk to the site. The grave field can be visited freely as a recreation area with no facilities, but it sits in a working agricultural landscape, so keep to paths and respect crops and livestock.
