Spillings Hoard

On 16 July 1999, a metal-detector survey of a field at Spillings farm in Othem parish, northern Gotland, produced a signal so dense it at first seemed like buried scrap. A television crew had been filming a segment on the looting of ancient sites; after the filming ended, the team, including archaeologist Jonas Ström, traced the signal to what proved to be the largest Viking-age silver treasure known anywhere: two silver caches weighing about 27 and 40 kilograms, together roughly 67 kilograms, plus a third deposit of over 20 kilograms of bronze scrap. The find lay beneath the floor of an early Viking-age building, packed into the remains of wooden chests. The silver took the form of hundreds of arm-rings and bangles used by weight as currency, along with ingots, ornaments and around 14,300 coins. The overwhelming majority are Islamic dirhams struck across the Caliphate and lands further east, alongside a single Byzantine coin, 23 Persian pieces and four Nordic coins from Hedeby, reflecting Gotland's role as a hub on the trade routes reaching east toward the Caliphate and the Volga. The youngest datable coins place the burial some time after 870-871 CE. Why such wealth was concealed and never recovered remains unknown; the owner may have died or been unable to return. The scale is without parallel: the previous record Swedish hoard, the Burge find from Lummelunda on Gotland (1967), weighed only about 10 kilograms. Beyond its sheer mass, Spillings is a snapshot of a far-reaching economy in which distant eastern silver circulated as bullion in a Baltic island community.

The find spot itself is ordinary farmland northwest of Slite and holds little to see. The treasure is displayed at Gotlands Museum (Fornsalen) in Visby, where a dedicated exhibition presents the silver much as it emerged from the ground: dense tangles of corroded arm-rings, spiral bangles, ingots and heaps of coins. Displays explain how the pieces were weighed as currency, trace the dirhams back to the Islamic world, and reconstruct the building where the caches were buried. Highlights include the mass of nearly 500 bangles and an unusual coin bearing a variant religious inscription. The presentation conveys both the staggering physical weight of the hoard and the long-distance trade networks that funnelled eastern silver to a Baltic island.

The hoard is exhibited at Gotlands Museum (Fornsalen) on Strandgatan in central Visby, easily reached on foot within the medieval walled town. Visby is served by ferries from Nynäshamn and Oskarshamn and by flights to Visby Airport. The museum is a ticketed attraction and typically keeps seasonal hours, with fuller opening in summer; confirm current admission, hours and any temporary closures on the official Gotlands Museum website before travelling. The original Spillings find site is private farmland near Slite with no visitor facilities, so the museum in Visby is the place to experience the treasure.
