Vendel boat-grave cemetery

Vendel is one of the defining sites of first-millennium Scandinavia. Between 1881 and 1883 the Swedish archaeologist Hjalmar Stolpe excavated a group of graves at the south-east corner of the churchyard, uncovering a series of richly furnished boat burials; in all, fourteen graves were recorded in and just beyond that corner. Several of the dead had been laid to rest in boats up to around nine metres long, surrounded by weapons and equipment for the afterlife: swords, spears and shields, ornate helmets, cauldrons and chains, glass and other beads, tools, and sacrificed animals, chiefly horses. The burials date to roughly the later sixth to eighth centuries. Their splendour led scholars to name an entire epoch of the Scandinavian Iron Age after the place: the Vendel Period (Vendel Age), together with its distinctive animal-ornament art style, which immediately preceded the Viking Age. Vendel's helmets are among its most celebrated finds. Those from graves 1, 12 and 14, ornamented with embossed metal plaques that depict armed warriors, closely resemble the famous early-seventh-century helmet from the Sutton Hoo ship burial in England; the shield from grave 12 even carries a stamped mount die-linked to an equivalent piece at Sutton Hoo, pointing to shared workshops. Many of the graves had been disturbed in antiquity, so the surviving objects represent only part of the original wealth. The finds are held by the Swedish History Museum in Stockholm.

At the site itself there is relatively little to see above ground: the boat graves lie in and just beyond the churchyard and were emptied of their contents long ago, so a visitor encounters the quiet rural setting of Vendel church rather than open trenches. The whitewashed medieval Vendel church (Vendels kyrka), begun in Romanesque style in the latter half of the thirteenth century and famous for fifteenth-century wall paintings by the artist known as Johannes Iwan, stands over the burial ground and is the main visible monument. Interpretive signage explains the cemetery. The spectacular grave-goods, including the plumed helmets, weapons and boat rivets, are displayed not here but at the Swedish History Museum in Stockholm. Nearby at Husby stands the large burial mound known as Ottarshögen, adding to the area's early-medieval landscape.

Vendel lies in the countryside of northern Uppland, in Tierp Municipality; the nearest larger towns are Tierp and Örbyhus, with Uppsala the closest city. A car is the most practical way to reach the village and church. The churchyard and its setting are freely accessible outdoors, and the church is normally open in the warmer months, though hours vary by season and services.
