Anundshög is the largest burial mound in Sweden, the centrepiece of a dense ceremonial landscape outside Västerås that was long used as an assembly ground and is traditionally tied to a legendary king. Its stone ships, runestone and standing-stone avenue mark it as a place of power from the late Iron Age into the Viking era.

Historien

Rising some nine metres high and around sixty metres across, Anundshög is Sweden's largest surviving burial mound. It sits on a low ridge in Badelunda, east of Västerås, at the heart of a monument complex with few equals in the region. The mound has never been fully excavated, so what lies within remains unknown. A hearth sealed beneath it has been radiocarbon-dated to roughly AD 210–540, showing the site was already in use before the mound was raised. Dating the mound itself is harder: most assessments place its construction in the late Iron Age, somewhere between the fifth and eleventh centuries, though estimates have ranged as far back as the Bronze Age. A trial investigation in 1998 found that the mound had been built over an older settlement. Folk tradition ties the mound to the legendary Swedish king Bröt-Anund, whose name it carries — a link first proposed by the antiquarian Johan Peringskiöld and still treated by historians as unproven. Beyond any burial, Anundshög was a thing-place, a site of assembly and judgement that stayed in use into the medieval period. Flanking the mound are large stone ships, the longer of them over fifty metres, and a row of raised stones beside the runestone Vs 13. Its inscription records that Folkvid raised the stones in memory of his son Heden, and that Vred cut the runes; the line of stones is thought to have marked the Eriksgata, the ceremonial route new kings rode to be acclaimed across the provinces.

Hvad du vil se

The great mound dominates the site, a smooth grassed dome you can walk around and, by a marked path, climb for a view over the surrounding plain. At its foot lie two large stone ships, their prows and sterns picked out by tall upright stones set in the turf. A striking row of about fifteen stones runs beside the mound, the weathered Vs 13 runestone standing among them, its inscription still legible. Scattered across the meadow are smaller mounds, stone circles and settings, part of a wider Iron Age grave field along the Badelunda ridge that may hold up to a couple of thousand burials. Interpretive signs explain the thing-place, the Eriksgata road and the ships. The whole ensemble reads as one connected ceremonial landscape rather than a single monument, best appreciated on a slow walk.

Besøg

Anundshög lies about six kilometres east of central Västerås in Badelunda, reachable by car or local bus from the city, which is roughly an hour by train from Stockholm. The site is open countryside, freely accessible year-round at no charge, with a car park, walking paths and outdoor information boards. A small café, Café Anund, operates near the site in summer, and archaeologist-led guided walks are offered in season. There is no large indoor museum on the mound itself; for related finds and context, Västmanlands läns museum (Västerås County Museum) in town is the place to go. For current opening times, café season and any guided walks, check the official Anundshög and Västerås tourism websites rather than relying on fixed hours here.
